In case you haven't seen them, there are a bunch of OVAs attached to all three series (and a movie, in the case of Steins;Gate), if you want extra material on any of them., and the specials for Steins;Gate, for Mirai Nikki, and an for Deadman Wonderland. If you want new series,. Trailer:. What it’s about: Tatsumi is an adventurer, newly arrived in the capital city hoping to earn enough money to support his destitute village. But life is more complicated here; everyone has an angle and no help is free. After several betrayals, Tatsumi falls in with the renegade group Night Raid, who seek to topple the central government that has become hopelessly corrupt. But is the solution they offer any better?.
Why you should watch it: It’s a well-executed fantasy adventure romp. While on the whole the tone of the show is fairly light-hearted, it’s not afraid to dip into darker themes when necessary. The animation and soundtrack are solidly above average (though the stylised single-panel callouts during fight scenes are an unusual way to go about things) and the voice actors throw in excellent performances. In all, it’s a very “turn off your brain and enjoy” type of show. Caveats: It’s not really a show that breaks the mould.
It’s very well done, but it rarely strays out of the standard tropes of the genre. Deep thinking is not required. Themes: Corruption, vigilantism. Similar works:,.
Trailer:. What it’s about: There is a dark underworld hidden from the civilians of Tokyo - a subspecies of 'ghouls' who, while human in appearance, are possessed of decidedly inhuman strength and cannibalistic urges. After a run-in with one such ghoul, Kaneki Ken wakes up to discover that the operation that saved his life has partially transformed him into a ghoul himself.
Elfen Lied Anime
Stuck half-way between the two worlds, Kaneki must face up to his new reality, without losing his grasp on his former mundane life. Why you should watch it: It's gory, dark, and absolutely riveting. Horror is a very hit-and-miss genre for anime, as the abstraction of animating a scene often lowers the visceral impact of the visuals. Tokyo Ghoul somehow manages to walk the line, using gore and suspense without falling into self-parody. The voice actors are excellent and the world itself is very well-painted, and the finale is utterly fantastic.
In all, it's definitely worth a watch if you're a fan of horror and haven't found much in anime to suit your tastes. Caveats: The big one here is the level of censorship in the original broadcast. This is one show that you definitely want to see the BluRay version for. Secondly, while the anime version works very well as a standalone, there is a substantial amount of background stuff that's been cut out of the original manga material in the interests of time.
The second season (Root A) takes a bit of a quality nosedive. Themes: Guilt and self-hatred - finding the monster within oneself and making peace with it. Persecution of the “other”, and the cycle of violence that ensues.
Similar works: is probably the closest, followed by and.

Berserk is excellent, though if older graphics are an issue for you, go for the film version instead. You lose a little characterisation, but it hits all of the core points from that arc of the manga.
If you do try and and you enjoy it, give Claymore a go. Elfen Lied is. It doesn't manage the tonal swings as adroitly as its creator thinks it does, and while 'Lilium' is utterly fantastic, the rest of the soundtrack is mediocre at best, causing them to lean too much on their one hit track. I actually don't like the mecha genre either, but at the insistence of my friends, I caved and watched it. I'm glad I did, because it doesn't revolve around mechs, but rather the strategy games and mind games. Code Geass definitely had quite a few mech battles, but they weren't just one on one, they were battles between armies that more so focused on strategy and tactics as the deciding factor. Kind of like an actiony Death Note.
I also watched Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, which both have mechs, and loved both because it's not about the mechs, but rather the characters and the adventure. Sometimes, there's more to an anime than just mechs. You should at least try the three episode rule (I think four would actually be better for Code Geass), and give it a shot. If you're still not convinced, try watching this, but at the expense of a few HUGE spoilers. Haven't seen Berserk but didn't care for Elfen Lied myself.
